The Pitch-Perfect Guide to first time camping in France
FIRST TIME CAMPING EN FRANCE? HERE’S THE PITCH-PERFECT GUIDE TO LA FORGE DE SAINTE MARIE
Whilst camping is definitely one of those divisive love-it-or-hate-it things, we can’t help but notice that for most folks who give holidaying under canvas a whirl, the lure of The Great Outdoors becomes addictive and there’s no looking back. Most likely the hate-it brigade’s only experience of camping was in the UK (where let’s face it, the ever-changing forecast can make the whole thing a little dicey), whilst the love-its have probably sampled the à la Française brand of camping: with France’s kinder climate and serious space, it really does lend itself to some heavenly tenting experiences.
Little wonder then that there’s almost three times the number of campsites in France than in the UK – although that can mean that finding the right one can be a time-consuming business; one man’s perfect site is not always the next man’s!
No need to worry though… With just a wee bit of research into finding your IDEAL SITE, booking your OPTIMUM PITCH, taking the RIGHT EQUIPMENT and thinking about THINGS TO DO while you’re there, you’ll end up with a pitch-perfect holiday (not to mention a great value for money one), even if you’re an absolute beginner.
GET YOUR SITE RIGHT!
Of course, every campsite has a different ethos: many campsites pride themselves on their non-stop party ambience (don’t forget your earplugs), whereas others might be very basic and provide a pitch but little else. Read between the lines too – a campsite might tick all your boxes on paper but be located in a terribly inaccessible, traffic-heavy holiday hotspot.
Here at Camping La Forge de Sainte Marie, our camping ethos is simple enough: at our unique 18th century heritage setting, we’re all about the fine balance between luxury and simplicity, between tranquillity and fun. Just wander through our images gallery or take this virtual tour by bike to see if we match your idea of camping perfection.
BOOK YOUR OPTIMUM PITCH
Whilst some sites try to squish as many tents as possible together, our beautiful winding pathways lead to spacious and dedicated pitches, each bordered by hedges. And using our camping webpage and Map, you can think about where you’ll like to be: you might like to be in a sunny or shady spot or you might like to be close to the washrooms, play area, pool or lake. Equally you may wish to be as far away from all those things as possible! And whether you need a large or small plot, an electricity and water supply, even the use of garden furniture for the duration of your stay, we can help you find your own little corner of paradise chez nous.
THE TENT: THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
It’s true that your first year of camping hits a little harder when you have to purchase your tent and associated paraphernalia. And you know the expression ‘bringing everything but the kitchen sink’, well, some campers like to bring theirs too! If you’d rather just bring the essentials, just search up ‘France family holiday camping checklist’ to see what you need. Don’t forget a corkscrew!
After those initial expenses however, the beauty of using your tent year after year is the great value for money that a camping holiday affords: compare the holiday cost to a roofed alternative in a holiday hotspot for example and you can’t help but pat yourself on the back for your wily wisdom! Take a look at our Pricing – even in high season, our pricing starts at a mere 37 euros per night.
THINGS TO DO ON YOUR CAMPING TRIP
There’s a great choice of things to do on site (we have an activities programme which you can make full use of or completely ignore) and we have all the facilities you’ll need; we’re not 5 star for nothing you know! You’ll find the shop, bar and restaurant, pool, snack bar, kids’ club etc. are all here for your luxury camping convenience.
And you’ll be amazed at how quickly the rural idyll and French joie de vivre kick start your digital-detox family adventure: whilst the kids hop off to the play area, pool or shop (someone’s got to pick up the croissant order!), you can be planning the day ahead, whether it’s on-site family activities or a local market, a cycling route or even a trip further afield to medieval Troyes or grandiose Nancy. Of course, you might choose to just chill out on-site at your own pace. Sometimes a swim, a barbecue and a little local champagne or beer at the bar is enough for one day!
Let us know if we can help you plan your first camping adventure. We love our happy campers!
A bientôt from all the team at Camping La Forge de Sainte Marie.
